Design for the built world.
VCS Design creates signage and environmental graphics meant to be built, used, and understood. Thoughtful, durable, and grounded in how people actually move through space.

A 75 Year Old Start-Up
VCS Design brings three decades of design experience into a fully realized design-build model. Backed by Valley City Sign Company and its 75-year history of fabrication and installation, we combine creative leadership with the stability and capacity required to deliver complex projects.

What We Do
We design signage systems that help people understand and navigate complex environments. From wayfinding to branded sign packages and master sign programs, our work balances visual impact with real-world function and long-term performance.

...Meets Storytelling
Design Thinking...

Design thinking, as we apply it, is not a workshop exercise or a diagram on a whiteboard. It is a practical framework for solving real problems in real environments.
We start by understanding context. Who is moving through the space. What decisions they need to make. What constraints exist, from architecture and codes to fabrication and maintenance. Every project begins with observation, clarity, and intent.
Good design thinking leads to systems that feel intuitive, purposeful, and durable because they are shaped by how spaces are actually used, not how they are imagined.
Storytelling gives design meaning. It connects information to experience and transforms signage from instruction into identity.
We use storytelling to express brand, reinforce place, and guide people through environments in ways that feel natural rather than forced. Materials, form, typography, and hierarchy all work together to communicate not just direction, but character.
When design thinking meets storytelling, the result is signage that functions clearly, attracts attention appropriately, and belongs to the environment it serves. It communicates. It guides. It feels right.

Featured Work - Harrisburg University of Science and Technology
The Challenge: Establish a cohesive visual identity for a newly constructed academic building, unifying interior and exterior signage, wayfinding, and branded environments into a clear and legible campus presence.
The Approach: Working in coordination with the university and the project team, the signage and environmental graphics program was developed to complement the architecture by Burt Hill while supporting intuitive navigation, institutional branding, and long-term scalability. Design decisions balanced clarity, durability, and visual consistency across all applications.
The Result: A comprehensive signage and environmental graphics system that reinforces the university’s identity, supports everyday use, and integrates seamlessly with the building’s architecture. The completed program provides a clear framework for interior and exterior communication while setting a visual standard for future campus development.

Design meets Execution
VCS Design is led by a partnership that brings together design leadership and operational depth. Our work is shaped by experience on both sides of the process, from early concept through fabrication and installation. The result is a studio that understands how ideas become built realities.
